Kevin Chen, one of the most exciting young pianists of our time, is making his debut at the KKL Luzern. The Canadian, aged just 21, has already won one prize after another. At the age of 17, he won the Concours de Genève; at 18, the Arthur Rubinstein Competition; and most recently, he took the silver medal at the Chopin Competition in Warsaw.

Together with Daniel Dodds, he has put together a programme centred on Chopin’s stay in Vienna in 1829. The highlight is Chopin’s brilliant Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor – a work with which Kevin Chen has already enjoyed great success. A real discovery is the pianist and composer Leopoldine Blahetka, whom Chopin met in Vienna and who was closely associated with Beethoven, Schubert and many other figures of her time. Beethoven’s Overture ‘Zur Namensfeier’ and Schubert’s ‘Unfinished Symphony’ thus round off this journey through the musical Vienna of the early Romantic period.
