In the second part of ‘The Four Seasons – A Different Take’, Benjamin Appl will be performing Schubert’s ‘Winterreise’.

The last of Fischer-Dieskau’s pupils is one of the leading lieder interpreters of our time. With an expressive interpretation of the text – shaped by his famous teacher – and a profound musical insight, the multi-award-winning baritone captivates audiences and critics alike on the world’s major concert stages.

Schubert’s ‘Winterreise’ is a work that, like almost no other, explores the existential questions of the human condition. With subtle nuance and great narrative power, Appl will trace the path of the lonely wanderer – from hope and memory to desolation and resignation.

The piano is replaced by a string quartet led by first violinist Daniel Dodds. The rich timbres and chamber-music intimacy of the strings lend Schubert’s famous song cycle a fascinating new perspective.
